Missions

A Mission is work Co-pilot does for you in the background, within a budget you approve, and reports back on when it is done. Chat needs you present; a Mission does not. You approve the budget, close the tab, and read the report later. Missions are on the Pro and Enterprise plans.

How a Mission runs

  1. Pick a template, or describe your own. A template has a fixed plan and a fixed budget. For your own goal, Co-pilot drafts a plan and a cost range. Drafting is free: nothing runs and nothing is charged until you approve a budget.
  2. Approve the budget. The budget is a cap, not a charge. You see it in dollars next to credits before you approve, and credits are spent only as the Mission runs. One credit is one US dollar.
  3. Co-pilot works in the background. It runs the backtests, checks and comparisons in the plan. While it waits on work it started, such as a backtest, it spends nothing.
  4. Read the report. You get a report when it is done, or a note when it needs you. Every step is recorded on the Mission's timeline.

The five templates

TemplateWhat it doesBudgetTypical run timeRepeat
Morning checkTells you what needs your attention today across your bots, bot runners and recent backtests. Reads only.$0.50 (0.5 credits)About 2 minutesOff, daily or weekly
Post-mortemExplains what went wrong with bots that stopped or lost money in the last 7 days. Reads only.$0.50 (0.5 credits)About 3 minutesRuns once
Backtest-drift watchCompares each running bot's live results with a backtest of the same strategy version over the same period, for up to 5 bots.$1 (1 credit)5 to 10 minutesOff, daily or weekly
Weekly consistency re-validationBacktests each strategy your bots run, unchanged, on three consecutive 30-day windows of the last 90 days, for up to 5 strategies, and flags the ones whose results disagree.$2 (2 credits)10 to 20 minutesOff, daily or weekly
Improve a strategy within a budgetTries up to 8 variants of one strategy by backtest only, and checks the best on a test period it never used to choose.$2.50 (2.5 credits)15 to 30 minutesRuns once

None of the templates changes a strategy or a bot. Improve a strategy works on a working copy: your strategy and your bots stay as they are. When a variant passes, the Mission offers it to you for approval, and an approved variant is saved as a new version of the strategy.

Improve a strategy works only on strategies made with the UI Builder. The first time you improve a strategy, you choose a test period: recent days set aside so the search never uses them to choose. That period is reserved permanently for the strategy and all of its versions, so no later hyperopt of it can use it.

A template's budget is fixed: you approve that amount and no other.

Needs you

A Mission stops and marks itself Needs you when it cannot go on without you. It spends nothing while it waits, and it keeps its place among your running Missions.

  • At the budget. When the next step would go past the budget, Co-pilot stops before that step. You choose: add budget and continue, or finish with what it has, which ends the Mission with a report on what it completed. Adding budget works on a template Mission too: the template's budget is where it starts, not a ceiling.
  • For an approval. When an Improve Mission finds a change that passes, it asks you to approve it before anything is saved.
  • For an answer. When a step needs something only you can decide, it asks.

Waiting approvals also appear on the Approvals page, next to the ones from Co-pilot chat.

Repeat

Repeat sets how often a Mission runs again: off, daily or weekly. You set it when you create the Mission.

  • A template on Repeat runs now, then every day or every week at the same budget until you turn it off. Before you approve, the console shows the most it can spend in a month at that rate.
  • Your own goal on Repeat runs now. Each run after that, Co-pilot drafts the plan again and waits for you to approve its budget.
  • Post-mortem and Improve a strategy run once.

Your repeating Missions are listed under Repeating Missions, where you can turn each one off.

Preview only

Preview only runs a Mission against your real data but changes nothing: each change it would have made is listed in the report and on the timeline instead. Use it to see what a Mission you described yourself would do before you let it act.

  • It is under Advanced when you describe your own Mission.
  • It is not offered on the templates: four of them only read, and Improve a strategy changes only a working copy, so there is nothing to preview.
  • A Preview only Mission runs once; it cannot be put on Repeat.

Bot permission

None of the five templates can act on a live bot, so a template Mission never takes a Bot permission, the time-boxed permission that lets a Mission act on named bots within limits you set. Bot permissions are not yet available to every organization.

Controls

While a Mission runs you can:

  • Pause it, and Resume it later.
  • Add a constraint, such as "do not change the stoploss". It applies from the Mission's next decision on.
  • Cancel it. A cancelled Mission cannot be resumed; work it already finished stays. You can also choose to delete the strategy versions, backtests and hyperopts it created. A version a bot runs, or one you built on, is kept.

Only a Mission's owner or an organization admin can cancel it.

A Mission counts as running while it works, while it waits on a job, and while it waits on you.

Mission spending comes from your organization's credit balance. An organization admin can set a monthly cap for Missions in the Spending policy; a repeating run whose budget would go past that cap does not start.

Passphrase-encrypted organizations

Missions are not available in an organization that uses passphrase encryption: a Mission runs while nobody is present to unlock your data. You can still use Co-pilot in chat.
